Quezon Avenue

You’ve probably seen España Boulevard in yesterday’s post, now I’ll show you the other side.

Coming from Manila (via España), the Mabuhay Rotonda is where España Boulevard ends and Quezon Avenue begins.

Prior to the installation of the U-turn slots by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) some time in the earlier half of this decade (can’t remember when specifically), motor vehicles were allowed to go around the rotunda (that’s why it IS called a rotunda). So, if you were to have gotten to the rotunda by mistake (from whichever way you came), you can just go around it and head back to where you came from.

When the U-turn slots were installed, access points to the piece of road that goes ‘round the rotunda were blocked with concrete barriers and concrete pipes turned into plant boxes. It has, since then, become quite troublesome (and quite costly) for motorists to find their way back, particularly for those coming from España. They either have to take the side streets (which are mostly one-way streets) or go past the rotunda to Quezon Avenue and take the nearest U-turn slot there which is a couple of blocks away.

Anyway, just an added note, the street corner on the left (with the posts painted with black and white stripes) is that of Kanlaon Street. Situated on this street (just a few steps from the corner, across Burger King) is the “terminal” for jeepneys plying the Welcome – Del Monte route.
